As the sun rose over the bustling streets of Lusaka in 2024, thousands of runners from around the globe gathered to participate in the highly anticipated Absa Marathon. For many, this event represented more than just a race—it was a test of physical and mental fortitude, a celebration of perseverance, and a journey of self-discovery.
Over 6,500 participants are expected to take part in the 2024 Absa Marathon, which has a budget of K6.5 million. Speaking at the official launch, Absa Bank Managing Director Mizinga Melu announced that a K45,000 cash prize will be awarded to the overall winners across various categories. She also revealed that this year’s event is expected to attract 100 elite athletes from different countries. In addition, K50,000 has been allocated as prize money specifically for local participants.
Melu stated that efforts are underway to obtain a bronze certification from World Athletics, a move that would register the Absa Marathon as a globally recognized event. This step marks a significant milestone for the marathon’s growth and international credibility. She emphasized the bank’s commitment to making the event a world-class competition that brings both local and international attention to Zambia.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu commended Absa Bank for its continued investment in sports, calling the marathon the largest sporting event in the country. He encouraged Zambians from all walks of life to participate, highlighting the marathon's potential to empower and transform lives. Zambia Athletics President Elias Mpondela added that an official from World Athletics will attend the event to ensure all standards are met ahead of the bronze certification.
The 2024 Absa Marathon has hit full registration limit as 6,500 participants are expected to hit the road tomorrow morning. Absa Bank Managing Director Mizinga Melu says this is the highest attendance the marathon has recorded since inception. Speaking at a press briefing held ahead of the 2024 Absa Marathon, Melu said over 100 international runners have confirmed participation in tomorrow's event. And Gavin Wright, an observer from World Athletics, is in the country to carry out an assessment. Wright said there are a number of things that should be put in place for the Marathon to gain international recognition. He said he will start by observing and accessing the event before recommendations are made to give Zambia a bronze certification. And Zambia Athletics President Elias Mpondela said it is gratifying to see the Marathon grow and pull huge numbers every year.
Government Absa’s investment of K6.5 million in the event, which aligns with the national sports policy's emphasis on regular physical activity and sports for health and social benefits. He said the marathon, which has grown in popularity, will bring together local and international runners, promoting a physically active community that contributes to the nation's productivity. The event offers K45,000 for winners in different categories. And to commemorate Zambia's 60th anniversary, the minister announced that the marathon kit will feature the "Zambia at 60" logo. Nkandu also encouraged many participants, including families, to join the event and urged the private sector to come on board. Also speaking at the launch, Absa Bank Managing Director, Mizinga Melu, reaffirmed the bank's commitment to supporting the government's efforts in promoting a healthy and fit nation. And, Zambia Athletics President, Elias Mpondela, emphasized that the marathon is an opportunity for recognition and that running is an art that requires full commitment. The event is expected to take place on 7 September 2024, and will feature 6,500 runners
